what is forest bathing?

Forest bathing is a cherished ritual for those seeking respite from the complexities of modern life.  Embracing this holistic approach to wellbeing, one discovers not only the beauty of the natural world but also a pathway to inner calm.

  • what.

Forest bathing, or forest therapy, is a slow, gentle and meditative wander that is activated by invitations designed to stimulate the senses, slow you down and animate the imagination.

We don’t walk far, it’s not a hike, we will not literally bathe in water. The pace is slow, not fast.

The focus is on connection to and relationship with nature. Our walks are designed for people of different experience, skills and abilities in nature.  All is welcome in nature on a forest bathing walk.

  • why.

Our guided nature mindfulness walks encourage you to engage your senses fully and absorb the sights, sounds and scents of the forest.

As one strolls through the dappled sunlight and listens to the whisper of the leaves or the gentle flow of a creek, stress dissipates, tension releases, time slows and expands, and a profound sense of tranquility and connection emerges.

  • benefits.

Studies have shown that forest bathing can enhance mental well-being, reduce anxiety and stress, and boost immune strength.  Creativity and memory are increased.  Sensory awareness becomes richer.

Participants can develop a deeper relationship with nature, an enhanced relationship to other human beings, and a greater appreciation for life.

The body, mind and soul can be restored.

  • who.

    Who is Forest Bathing For?

Are you spending too much of your time online, in front of a screen, stuck in traffic or juggling life’s pressures and commitments?

    Feeling stressed and fatigued?

Exhausted from trying to navigate an increasingly ungrounded world?

Hearing the call to spend more time in nature?

    Desire a healthier life/work balance?

Want to shift your relationship to the outdoors from physically challenging long hikes and bagging summits to a more meditative, calming, accessible activity in nature?

Then forest bathing is for you.

"Tension is who you think you should be, relaxation is who you are.”

– Chinese Proverb

Everyone feels better after a walk in nature.

The modern practice of forest bathing originates in Japan in the 1980s, where it is called shinrin-yoku, or “bathing in the atmosphere of the forest.”  That society was experiencing a dramatic technological and cultural change.   Digital addiction, stress, pollution, exhaustion rose in this high tech, high stress, urban lifestyle, which correlated to a spike in cancer and autoimmune disease.  In response, the Japanese government researched solutions including forest therapy. Today, millions of Japanese citizens walk on designated shinrin-yoku trails every year for their health and well-being, revitalizing the economies of rural prefectures in the countryside.
